*PREREQUISITE: Previous instruction on a string instrument, wind instrument, piano or percussion; must have completed one year in a high school orchestral or band ensemble; must have a successful audition with the conductor; enroll with instructor/conductor approval. Must be simultaneously enrolled in a Wellesley High School band or orchestral ensemble. Private lessons are strongly recommended.

Chamber Music is an audition-only large ensemble with a limited number of strings, piano, brass, woodwind and percussion chairs, based on the instrumentation needs of the group. It is comprised of advanced 10th, 11th, and 12th grade musicians. Repertoire includes chamber music of various styles and historical periods. This course will offer instruction in the development and refinement of advanced performing and chamber ensemble techniques. Chamber ensembles will perform at annual school concerts and other scheduled performances. Participation and attendance at rehearsals and performances outside of school hours will be required. Participation in the District and All-State process is encouraged.

The Wellesley Public Schools Performing Arts Program offers a comprehensive program of experiences for all students. Courses offered through the Performing Arts are grounded in the Massachusetts State Arts Framework Essential Skills and Standards; Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting.
Chamber Music Essential Skills:
Creating:
Students will generate instrumental interpretations that integrate aesthetic and stylistic principles with personal attitude.
Performing:
Students will perform with accuracy and expression works from the professional string, chamber, and symphony orchestra repertoire (MICCA level 6 and more difficult).
Students can play all minor and major scales in all positions with both slurred by 3 (Double Bass 2) and separated bow.
Responding:
Students will analyze how one’s own cultural and personal can affect the criteria one uses to evaluate understanding and musical performance.
Connecting:
Students will explain the development of the group’s vision as an ensemble and how it is represented in a performance.
