The Science and Technology Department runs a peer tutoring program intended to support students seeking help in science. Upperclass students who have demonstrated proficiency in science volunteer their time to assist students who are seeking support with their science studies.
Peer tutors will not be expected to teach topics covered in science classes, rather they will help students improve their study skills. The goal will be to help students learn how to gain proficient understanding of the science material on their own. Peer tutors are asked to not directly answer questions but they will help students use their textbooks, class notes, handouts, and other resources to find answers on their own. The objective is to create independent learners. Peer tutoring takes place during the school day and students who are interested in receiving this support will be matched with a peer tutor based on the availability of a tutor during their directed researches of free periods.
The goal of this program is to build a cooperative learning environment where students struggling in their science classes can find the support they need to be more successful students.
Tutors and tutees meet in the WHS Library at the Science Peer Tutoring table.
