Assignment 4: Independent Final Project
I decided to turn in the direction of self portraits to expand on and explore my understanding of both oil paint as a medium as well as my perception of self.
Observing myself through a makeshift stacked-mirror-easel setup, I experimented with abstracted, realistic, and obstructed takes on the traditional self portrait.
Pictured above:
Layout of paintings for final critique.
An additional mirror hung on the wall between the yellow green and fleshy squishy painting is not pictured, as it had to be removed for other purposes prior to photographing.
After experimenting, I began a series that married my love for portraiture with a newfound interest in abstraction, color intentionality, and experimentation. I imagined squeezing and stretching my face to fill the varying dimensions of each canvas, portraying different elements of identity in each embodied canvas.
Two of the paintings involved a limited 3 color palette, which included the warm and cool toned paints of a specific color, along with a contrasting accent color (e.g. Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, & Alizarin Crimson).

ARTS 208: The Digital/Analog Rift with Professor Kathya Landeros
First Assignment
2024
Up With The Wind is an illustrated children's book I proposed and designed for my Children's Literature class.
Grace loves summertime and yellow dandelions. But before she knows it, all the flowers have turned into white balls of fluff! One day, a giant gust of wind suddenly blows Grace away from her beloved field of blossoms. She holds on to a dandelion seed and is carried to faraway places that she’s not sure if she can call home. Up With The Wind follows Grace on her journey as she grapples with the idea of belonging, what it means to change, and discovers how to bloom in unexpected circumstances.
