Professor of Physics Emeritus Phyllis J. Fleming was legendary at Wellesley and stayed on to tutor struggling students long after retirement.

Professor Sarah Frances Whiting founded the Physics and Astronomy Departments and served as the first Director of the Whitin Observatory. The Whiting Medal is awarded at the annual Sarah Frances Whiting Lecture given by a distinguished astronomer.
