Overview of the Clinical Training Program: Wellesley College is a private liberal arts college located about 12 miles from downtown Boston on a beautiful 500-acre campus. Wellesley students come from all over the world, and represent a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. This rich diversity helps to create a vibrant, multicultural campus community. Wellesley is also one of the few colleges that offer need-blind admissions to ensure it's financially possible to attend and thrive.
The Stone Center Counseling Service is committed to the promotion of student psychological growth. The services provided include individual counseling, a wide range of groups and workshops, and training and consultation to students, staff and faculty. Counseling services are made available to all students without charge. Special emphasis is placed on multicultural awareness and training by a staff that is diverse in race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. The Counseling Service is part of the Division of Student Life at Wellesley College.
The theoretical orientation of the Counseling Service is informed by the Relational-Cultural Model, developed by Jean Baker Miller and her colleagues. This model focuses on growth-fostering relationships as a central human necessity and relational disconnections as a fundamental source of psychological problems. Other theories are also drawn upon in the clinical work with students. Empathy, mutuality, relational awareness and authenticity are seen as central elements in clinical practice. The Clinical Training Program offers a Relational-Cultural Therapy training seminar series through the year to our intern cohort, which is supported by the originators of the theory along with the Counseling Service staff.
The Clinical Training Program at the Stone Center Counseling Service is focused on the training of interns & trainees to provide counseling services to Wellesley College students. The experience includes individual and group counseling, workshops, outreach and educational programming, as well as consultation with members of the college community. Each intern is provided an opportunity to engage in educational/outreach activities and events each year, which could occur after-hours/weekends. The Clinical Training Program is a nine month training program consisting of 24 hours per week (3 - 4 days per week). The Counseling Service is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, with Wednesday & Thursday being required days for training and supervision.
Components of the Training Program include individual clinical supervision, group supervision, several training seminars, clinical team meeting, a trainee lunch support group, and additional opportunities such as attendance at the Division of Student Life meetings.
