How Can You Help Your Child at Home?

Students can be made aware of correct speech and language daily. To foster good communication skills at home you can be a good speech model. Here's how:

  • Pronounce words clearly, slowly, and correctly when speaking to your child

  • Listen to your child when he/she is reading spelling lists or vocabulary lists

  • Listen to your child read

  • Take turns reading alternate paragraphs or chapters in a story

  • Ask your child about the story. Encourage them to ask questions too.

  • Have your child retell the story

These everyday activities allow your child to explore and practice in a more functional environment. In addition, they provide you both with some special moments to share. Speech and language is part of everyday life. Your child is practicing all the time. Be an active listener and a good model!

"The ability to communicate is a beautiful gift. Help your child nurture the gift of communication."

Today is...Smile Power Day!!!

A smile is very important. It can make you feel happy and it can also make others feel good. Nowadays, when wearing a mask, it is difficult to see others smile, but that doesn't mean we should stop. Look at your partner and ask your partner to smile. What other part of his/her face changes? Check out the eyes and cheeks? What do they look like? Now have your partner put on a mask. Can you tell if they are smiling? Check out their eyes and cheeks. You should be able to tell if a person is smiling or not. While around the house, try to smile a bit more today. Everyone may feel a little better because of the happiness you are spreading! A smile is a non-verbal way to communicate feelings!!! Everyday is all about communication! Have a wonderful day.

For those of you who may not know Donald Duck, he is a beloved Disney cartoon character. Many people adored him because of his quick temper. The situations he encountered were more complicated because he "flew off the handle" easily. When a person "flies off the handle," they become angry very quickly. Check out this short video of Donald trying to get to sleep.

Language: Read or have a partner read the poem below. Try to explain in your own words to your partner what you think the expression, “April showers bring May flowers” means to you. Look up three flowers from the poem that you have never seen. Draw a picture of what your imaginary garden may look like in May.

Articulation: Complete the above activity. While listening or reading the poem try to find words that have your speech sound. Write the words on a separate piece of paper and highlight your sound. Say the words three times each. These words may be difficult to produce. Use a mirror to help you see your sound. Use (+) and (-) to judge your own productions.

April Showers….

April showers bring May flowers,

That is what they say.

But if all the showers turned to flowers,

We’d have quite a colorful day!

There’d be bluebells and cockleshells,

Tulips red and green,

Daffodils and Chinese squill,

The brightest you’ve ever seen.

You’d see tiger lilies and water lilies,

Carnations pink and blue,

Forget-me-not and small sundrop

Glistening with the dew.

We’d have fireweed and milkweed

And many more different flowers.

Mexican star and shooting star,

Falling in the showers.

And if all the showers turned to flowers

On that rainy April day,

Would all the flowers turn to showers

In the sunny month of May?

I could not find the poet’s name who created this poem. If I ever do I will credit him/her on another daily activity.

Language: Choose five items in your house to describe to a partner. Do not show or tell your partner what they are. Use at least three details so that your partner can guess the item. Try to start with the category, then provide the details.

Here’s an example: My item is a couch. (Remember it’s a secret!)

  1. First, I would tell my partner, “This item is a piece of furniture.” (Furniture is the category.)

  2. Next, I would say, “You can find it in the living room.”

  3. Then I would say, “Many people can sit on it.”

Describe the item well enough so your partner can guess. After you are done with your five items, switch with your partner. Now it’s your turn to guess your partner’s items!

Rate: Complete the above language activity. Use an appropriate rate so that you will be understood.

Articulation: With a partner review the steps of making a good speech sound. What do you have to do with your articulators (mouth parts)? Remember to say the steps in order. Say the words five times each. This can be difficult to produce. Use a mirror to help you see your sound. Use (+) and (-) to judge your own productions.

Happy Superhero Day!

Heroes can be many different types of people. Community Helpers are people who live and work in a community (i.e. police officers, mail carriers, nurses, hairdressers, bakers, grocers, etc.). First Responders are community helpers that are trained to respond in emergency situations (i.e. police officers, firefighters, doctors, teachers, etc.). All of these people can be considered heroes. Click on the link below to listen or read the short story, “What Makes Someone a Hero?”.

We know about superheros that we see in movies, such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. A superhero is a person who has *superhuman powers and uses them to do good things and help people. However, there are also superheroes that live among us in our community everyday. These superheroes are different because they don’t wear capes or have *superhuman powers but they still work hard to help people in the community.

*Superhuman powers are powers that are beyond what a typical human can do (i.e. fly, invisibility, read minds, super speed/strength etc.).

Find a partner and do the following activities:

Language:

After you listen to or read the short story discuss the questions using complete sentences:

  1. Why are heroes special people ? (Why= a reason)

(Even though they don’t have superhuman powers or wear capes like the superheroes we see in movies.)

  1. State 3 examples of how heroes and superheroes are the same and how they are different.

  2. Answer the last question in the story. (Now think...)

  3. Draw a picture of the hero and/or superhero you would like to be.

Articulation:

Complete the above language activity using your best speech, focusing on your specific speech sound(s) while answering the questions. Use (+) and (-) to judge your own productions.
