Info about DRA and The Reading Inventory

DRA2

Developmental Reading Assessment or DRA are an individually administered assessment of a child’s reading capabilities. It is not a pass or fail test and they do not receive a grade. It’s simply a tool that will be used by teachers to identify a student's reading level by assessing their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Once levels are identified, a teacher can use this information to guide planning and instruction. It will also help the teacher focus on specific goals that the student needs to achieve. DRA levels will indicate which books a student can read independently. Parents and students can use DRA levels to find books that are ‘just right’ for their needs.

Information about The Reading Inventory

This year all students in grades 3-11 will be assessed in reading using The Reading Inventory. It is not a pass or fail test and they do not receive a grade. It will be administered in a group setting on their Chromebooks and then each student will be given a Lexile level. This assessment will be given four times throughout the year. The results will focus on specific goals that the student needs to achieve. It will allow teachers to determine who is reading at grade level.

Reading Leveling

Reading leveling such as the DRA or Lexile levels use various ways to determine the readability of a text. Some readability formulas, like the DRA, include text structure, text length, word difficulty, repeated words and story/text complexity. DRA also measures fluency which the Lexile does not measure. Lexile levels are assigned based on the readability of a book. Lexiles are often measured by word frequency and sentence length. Based on these measures, a Lexile level is assigned to a text. Lexile assessments measure a reader's skill level then assign a Lexile level. No measuring system is going to account for interest level. Students should be encouraged to select reading materials around their interest level, too, as interest level drives comprehension.
