Our Earth is made up of several interwoven systems:
Geosphere: the solid Earth, made of rock and metal
Hydrosphere: the liquid Earth, water flowing from rivers to seas
Cryosphere: the frozen Earth, thick caps of polar ice
Atmosphere: the gaseous Earth, a thin envelope of air
Biosphere: the living Earth, unique (?) to this planet alone
In this course, students will explore and investigate these five systems, their complex and interconnected histories, their relevance to our way of life, and their analogues on other planetary bodies.

Waves batter the rocky coastline of Oregon at an inlet called the Devil's Churn, kicking up dramatic clouds of spray. Up above the crashing surf, the iron-rich soil and humid ocean winds support a lush temperate rainforest environment. Interactions like these between the rocks, ocean, air, and plants shape our planet.
