When the 1st Cavalry Division – one of the most decorated regiments of the U.S. Army – gets deployed in to action, Nicholas Tobin will be an essential member of their team.
A graduate of the International Baccalaureate diploma program at Assumption College Catholic High School, Tobin is now a second lieutenant with the army and will be assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood Texas in March after completing the military intelligence basic officer leader’s course he’s currently taking at Fort Huachuca in Arizona.
“I’m the type of person who needs a challenge,” said Tobin, who graduated from Assumption in 2014. “The IB program at Assumption really challenged me, and it helped me rise to the many challenges that I would face during my military training. It really prepared me for the type of discipline and effort that was required of me.”
After leaving Windsor, Tobin went to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, where he went through four years of rigorous academic, physical, military, and leadership and character development training required to become an officer. Upon graduating last May, he started a three-month internship with the FBI’s joint terrorism task force in New York City.
As a military intelligence officer, Tobin’s role will be to advise his commanding officer on critical decisions they will have to make any time the unit is deployed on a mission.
Nicolette Santilli is well on her way to becoming a clinical pharmacist and she owes a great deal of her academic success to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Assumption College Catholic High School.
“IB courses really encourage higher level thinking, exactly the way they do at university, so it just made it so much easier to transition from being a high school student to being a university student,” said the 2013 Assumption graduate. “You’re surrounded by motivated individuals, and that just makes for a richer experience.”
After Assumption, Santilli earned a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree at Wayne State University. She then proceeded and has completed her Doctor of Pharmacy program.
She is currently a pharmacist at the University of Southern California at Ralph's Pharmacy.
Dr. Marisa Market, an International Baccalaureate Diploma Graduate of 2011, graduated from the University of Windsor having achieved a Bachelor of Biological Science Honours with Thesis in 2015, and was then accepted to the University of Ottawa in the combined MD/Ph.D. program.
She recently graduated with her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the the University of Ottawa, having successfully defended her thesis on July 20th, 2020.
Her CIHR-funded Ph.D. research investigated innate immune cell function postoperatively in cancer surgery patients to elucidate the mechanisms of immune suppression and cancer metastasis. She now has numerous peer-reviewed publications spanning basic science, clinical research, quality improvement, and pedagogical research. Most recently she published a review on NK cells and COVID-19 pathophysiology. Dr. Market is in her third year of Medicine and is currently in an acute care/ emergency medicine block on the front lines at The Ottawa Hospital. She will be pursuing a career as a surgeon-scientist.
Shanna Tobin is working at one of the largest and most well-known private banks in the world, learning to manage assets for some of their most affluent clients. Graduating from the International Baccalaureate program at Assumption College Catholic High School was an extremely important step on the pathway that led her there.
“I do not believe I would have been offered admission to the Kelley School of Business if I had not done the IB program,” said the senior at Indiana University, who graduated from Assumption in 2015. “It really prepared me with great work habits and time management skills for the challenges I have had and will continue to have, while differentiating myself.”
After her third year studying finance and international business, Tobin landed an internship at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Chicago. After successful completion of the internship, Shanna was offered a full-time position at their Chicago office, which will begin after graduating next year. She’ll work in the wealth management division, which handles issues such as investment strategies, business restructuring, and tax issues for high net worth clients.
