Name It to Tame It
Name the Emotion and Cause
WHY: Increase Emotional Vocabulary.
HOW: Hang visuals with emotions Add discussion points in schoolwork.
WHEN: Notice and discuss emotions in the moment, in books, in videos, in each other.
CONNECT: Share your own emotions (constructively), This includes both positive and negative emotions.
WHERE: Where is it coming from, was there a cause/trigger? (antecedent).
Tame it
CHOICE: How can you respond to that emotion?
Student: Positive behaviors/responses can be tied into classroom/building recognition system (C.A.R.E.).
Adults: Take a breath, Acknowledge what your body is experiencing, Make a choice to proceed.
Student and Adult: Work together to find a solution (Don’t go at it alone, seek help or offer help when appropriate).
Now Save it
POST-IT: Write it down. Tuck the solution away for the next time that emotion arises.
PRACTICE: Do a role-play at morning meetings to practice in a calm setting. Choose out different emotions or situations to practice throughout the year (especially the first few months) to expand emotional vocabulary.
