I have learned how to live my own best life.
I grew up in Southern Ontario, Canada. After high school, I went into nursing and worked lots of weekends and holidays and shifts while I married and had two babies. While science fascinated me, I hated going to work; I went with a heavy heart. In 1985, my family and I moved to Paraguay in South America to serve the Anglican Church: my husband worked with local pastors and I did some teaching in the hospitals, nursing schools, and communities. It was both a tremendous challenge and a life-changing, exciting adventure. But I was left with a lot of questions about my own identity, meaning, and purpose.
When we returned to Canada in 1991, I went to university and studied Theology. To my surprise (and probably everyone else's!) I loved it and just kept going! A few years later, I had a PhD in Religious Studies and a lot of answers to my questions! In 2000, Barton College offered me a faculty position and--as our daughters were now well-launched--my husband and I moved to Wilson, NC. For twenty years, I worked joyfully with undergrads to help them find their own unique identity, purpose, and meaning.
During that time, I also explored all sorts of wonderful healing modalities as part of a course I taught on Healing and Religion. I became a 500-hour Registered Yoga Instructor and taught classes at the local YMCA and at the college. I studied Spiritual Direction, Shamanic Healing, Meditation, and so much more. I walked an ancient pilgrimage trail, and traveled around the world to visit a wide variety of sacred spaces. I have dabbled in all sorts of weird and crazy things!
After struggling with poor health for a very long time, I met with a functional medicine practitioner who considered the cause, rather than the symptoms, of my illness. I made a few simple lifestyle changes and finally started to feel well: vibrant, energetic, and focused! This approach was something I wanted to learn more about! So I went through the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA) to become a health and wellness coach; I later became national board certified and worked as an instructorr for FMCA--coaching coaches to coach! Perfect!
By 2024, I had retired from both my faculty position at Barton College and at FMCA and moved back to Canada to be closer to family. In the morning, I wake up energized and ready to get to work! One of my favorite things to do is talk to people about how to create their best life. Are you ready to get started?
