Hi everyone, I’m Ruth and here is a bit about myself.
I was born in Bonnie Scotland, however my family moved to Zambia when I was a toddler so, while proud of my Scottish/Irish roots, I feel my years in Africa have also very much influenced my outlook on life.
I studied a BA in Hospitality Management at Napier University, Edinburgh, and worked in that industry for many years, in cafes, bars and restaurants to tea houses and backpacking hostels. One of my favorite jobs was driving a funicular railway in Wellington, New Zealand, a tourist attraction and also a mode of transport for folks to get up and down the hilly city.
After around 11 years of living in New Zealand and Australia, enjoying the laid-back pace of life and beautiful scenery, I returned to Scotland for a few years. As I love exploring the planet and living in different countries, a plan formed in my mind to teach English as a foreign language and in 2018 I made it a reality when I moved to Shanghai to work as an ESL Teacher. Had 5 fun and interesting years teaching in China and when it was time to move on, I decided that Chiang Mai should be my next stop.
Arrived here in April 2023 with my 3 naughty cats and studied Thai Language at CMU before finding work as a teacher. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to live in Thailand and teach at Dara Academy.
My philosophy as a teacher is to do my best to nurture each students individual talents, build respectful relationships with each of them and to make learning as enjoyable as possible.
