In this shoot I want to capture the idea of books on a shelve. I will look at the whole shelve, then I will look at the books individually.
Evaluation
What worked? The concept itself was good, although the images did not capture that.
What didn't, how could this be improved? The shoot as a whole was a flop. Most photos were underexposed or overexposed. There was a lot of repetition. As well as the location not being the most interesting of locations. The shoot just did not produce strong images.
What are you going to do next time to extend your idea? Next time I would find a location where I could capture the whole bookcase. I would ensure that the lighting is not so dark.
To photograph in the style of André Kertész: I will use objects such as books and a clock, as my theme is books and I want to highlight how when you read you escape time and reality. They will have a purposeful placement with a variety of angles. Like André Kertész I will use natural light. To make it more in his style I will convert my photos into black and white.
Features I like:
Purposeful placement
Lighting/shadows
André Kertészs work
My work
Evaluation
What worked? The subject matter worked really well, it had a strong composition.
What didn't, how could this be improved? I didn't really have bold shadowing or a strong directional light.
What are you going to do next time to extend your idea? Next time I would use a different location to ensure I have bold shadowing or a strong directional light.
To photograph in the style of Cara Barer: I will use books as my still life matter. Like Cara Barer I will wet my books and morph them into shapes. They will have a plan black background to draw your eye to the book. These photos will be shot inside, because Cara Barer uses a studio. Some photographs will be in black and white, while others will have colour. As Cara Barer does both. Drawing inspiration from Cara Barer's destruction of books with water, I will experiment destroying books with fire to show contrast. I will photograph these outside where I can control the fire. My theme is books, and by wetting and morphing the books I'm accentuating how the story these books hold morph differently in peoples minds and lives when they relate to them. Through burning the books I'm highlighting how words can be destructive.

Evaluation
What worked? I used the features and style of Cara Barer in my shoot by wetting and morphing the books. I also photographed against a black and background as this added depth and shadows into my photographs.
What didn't, how could this be improved? Some of my photos were blurry because I didn't hold my camera still while photographing the fire photos, in the future I would be less stressed about getting heaps of shots and focus on each photo. The sculpted book photos had shadows from the camera, I would change the lighting or make sure my shadow isn't in the photos.
What are you going to do next time to extend your idea? Next time I would look at more locations to have a nicer background in the background of the fire photos. I would also do more than one book burning to add more of a composition. For the wet books I would experiment with more shapes and ways to crinkle the book, as well as different types of books, eg music sheets. Could also do more ink work and strengthen that idea.
To photograph in the style of Victor Schrager I will purposefully place books standing up and in stacks. Books will be used as my still life like him. They will be lined up diagonally from each other, giving an abstract feel. I will also take different angles of the books, to add diversity. I will stack the books up in piles to add height to the photos. I will try and use strong compositions. My shoot will be in colour like Victor Schrager. The books will be the focal point and the background will be blurred. In some shoots he does it in nature, so I will shoot in and outdoorsy environment.

Blurred background
Use of lines
Evaluation
What worked? I used the features and style of Victor Schrager by photographing in colour and had intentional strong compositions of my still life. In some photos I blurred the background and had the books in focus.
What didn't, how could this be improved? The location I used was very windy, which made all the books fall over so I was unable to get the photos I wanted of the books standing up in lines. Which made it hard to do strong compositions similar to Victor Schrager.
What are you going to do next time to extend your idea? Next time I would choose a different location or different time so it wasn't as windy so the books would be bale to stand up. If I did this shoot again I would base my shoot on a different shoot of Victor Schrager where he photographs with trees and paper. I would put books on the trees, I could use nature books, or I could use music sheets, or I could highlight key words in the books.

Ideas:
Do you have a clear theme and direction? What needs to be improved / refined?
Yes I have a clear theme of books, I'm unsure of what direction I am going with. I need to refine my theme so I can work out what direction I am going with so I can then develop that idea further.
Does your work show a range of different ideas to explore? If not, what can you do from here? Can you see how your ideas are developing? Have you got a range of ideas?
My work has a good range of different ideas to explore. My ideas aren't really developing, every shoot is just a different idea. My ideas range each shoot.
What ideas need further exploration, refinement to make them stronger?
I need to further explore the ideas in shoot 2, I could refine it by looking at time passing, and relate in to the destruction of my other shoots. Look at the idea of destruction over time.
What are your most innovative and creative aspects of your photographs?
I think the most creative and innovative aspects of my photographs are the compositions. I have experimented with my compositions, they aren't all central and i've moved and added things to my shot to add more interesting compositions.
What are some new ideas, potential options you could use?
Some new ideas is adding the yellow clock from shoot two into my other shoot ideas of destruction. Showing as time passes destruction occurs. I could look more into the words the books are saying and use those words to inspire the shoot. I could look more into nature and put words over the flowers, as well as having books into natural environments to change up location.
Photographic Conventions
What conventions can you see that have been explored in your images?
I have explored compositions, perspective and range of depth of field.
Does your photographic layout of work show a range of conventions?
My layout shows different; compositions, a slight range in depth of field, lighting (natural and artificial), and perspective/angles.
Examples
- Range of depth of field
- Shutter speed
- Lighting
- Composition
- Framing
- Perspective
- Leading Lines
Camera Angles - do you have a variety?
Yes, I have a variety of camera angles. In each shoot I tried to experiment with angles. I've used Bird’s Eye Angle, High Angle, Eye-level Angle, Low Angle/ Worm’s Eye Angle.
Camera shots - do you have a variety? Yes I have a variety of different camera shots. I've used close up, medium shot and in other photos that aren't displayed on this piece of work I have also used long shot and extreme long shot.
Layout
Does your layout work together as a sequence?
The layout of the photos works really well together and fits together nicely.
Is there a systematic flow? How does this need to be improved?
There isn't really a systematic flow, the photos don't really relate to another.
Do you have a hierarchy of size and a range of sizes? Are your large photographs your best images?
I don't really have much of a range of sizes, there is no hierarchy. My largest photographs are not my best images.
Print quality of your images? Do any photographs need adjustments?
My print quality is good, none of my photographs need adjustments.
What do you need to do better for your next layout? Please set some goals.
I need a variety of different sizes and different layouts os its not repetitive.
Artist models.
Can you see the use of artist models to generate original work, which are obvious? Shoot three is the most obvious of which artist model I used, the rest of my shoots have generated original work and kind of gone away from the artist model.
Do you need to further explore the use of artist models to explore in your work? Why I need to branch out and find artist models that inspire me to think outside the box further, so I can develop new ideas into my folio board.
