Fonferek Glen

Fonferek Glen is a park (since 1991) on the Niagara Escarpment in Brown County.

Geological

The most prominent feature of the park is the waterfall that is about 30 feet tall. "Fonferek Glen is part of the Niagara Escarpment that was created by Silurian dolomite approximately 400,000 years ago. In the park the escarpment runs along the 800-foot contour that marks the lay of the land as being 800 feet above sea level(note that the water surface of Green Bay is approximately 570 feet above sea level). The glen itself consists of a deeply buried valley that cuts into the escarpment along its northern edge. The glen from top to the creek bottom is itself approximately 50 feet in height. National Geographic defines erosion as, "Erosion is the process where rocks are broken down by natural forces such as wind or water. " The creek (Bower Creek) that runs through Fonferek Glen has, over time, eroded down the layers of rock. The rock is a soft dolomite. One place this happened is at the far end of Fonferek Glen, where the erosion created a rock bridge by eroding through the top of a cliff and creating a skylight. When the constant water running over the top of the cliff edge cave made the top too thin to withstand the water anymore, it collapsed.
