Early Childhood Special Education
Early Childhood Special Education Services are activities designed to enhance the development of the preschool child and provide experiences in one or more of the following areas: talking, seeing, hearing, learning, walking, behavior. The goal of the WDMESC Early Childhood Special Education Program is to locate, identify, and evaluate three, four, and five-year-old children with developmental delays and to provide special education services until they transition to kindergarten.
A child may be eligible for special services if he/she is age 3 through 5 and is experiencing difficulties which interfere with normal development in these areas: speech/language, vision, hearing, motor skills, behavioral/social skills, self help skills, problem solving skills, cognition/readiness skills
The following services are provided as needed at no cost to the family: screening, evaluation, preschool instruction, speech/language therapy, physical/occupational therapy, family training, other appropriate services.
These services are provided free to the parent/guardian in the four-county area of White, Woodruff, Lonoke, Prairie Counties, along with Jacksonville North Pulaski School District . The Early Childhood Staff works closely with school districts, head start programs, day care facilities, and parents in these counties in order to meet the goal of the program
Gathering information about a child experiencing problems that interfere with learning.
A child can be recommend for screening at any time by calling the Wilbur D Mill office. We will set up a time and date for that child to be screened in the areas of vision, hearing, developmental skills, and communication. If the screening process identifies a delay, a referral for further evaluation may be made. When the evaluation process is completed a committee will determine if the child qualifies for special education services. If they do, a plan is developed to address the deficit area(s). A review of the child's progress, educational placement, and plan is done annually.
Services are provided by Wilbur D Mills staff and may assist with:
