About Me

Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to read a little bit about me. My name is Susan Schaffer and this is my 18th year in education. I grew up and still reside in Gibbstown with my husband, Mike. I am a class of 2000 graduate of Paulsboro High School, a 2004 graduate from Rowan University with a BA in Communications, and a 2016 graduate from Rowan University with my MA in Educational Leadership.

I bring a lot of experience to the classroom. I have been a classroom aide, taught 5th-8th grade, was an Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Special Education and Curriculum, and a Chief School Administrator. The classroom is where I can make the most impact on our students and is my happy place!

I am very excited to continue to be a part of the West Deptford Middle School community. To be a part of this community is something special. It is evident that there is pride that carries through our school hallways, into the classrooms, on the fields, and the courts. Being an Eagle is so much more than wearing a shirt with a logo. It is pride in a community that cares about its students, school, and all that encompasses. It is the dedication to long-standing traditions and values that only come in a tight-knit community.

My classroom is a safe place for our students to grow and learn. I enable and encourage them to become productive parts of our community so that the traditions can continue and the pride can thrive.

As an educator, I understand the need for someone who is compassionate and understanding as well as firm and decisive. My relationships with my students, their parents, and the community are the cornerstone of my success and something in which I take pride. I was a 2014 Teacher of the Year at Paulsboro High School, nominated twice by my colleagues for Professional of the Year, and in 2023-2024 was honored as a Soaring Above staff member.

Philosophy

I know the importance of working with students, parents, educators, and the community to ensure each student achieves success in all aspects of their education including academic, social, emotional, and physical. I want to prepare each student to be a sound, productive, and active citizen in our society while fostering the unique potential of each individual student so that they may reach their highest level of success in a challenging and student-centered learning environment that prepares each student for their next phase.

I believe that each individual child is unique and needs support, care, and understanding at home, at school, and within their community so that they may grow and mature academically, emotionally, physically, and socially.

My goal is to motivate students to ascertain their inner strengths and abilities while discovering what truly inspires them. I feel that the method of facilitating rather than dictating is highly beneficial and allows for all students to be involved in their education. I know how vital education is in the preparation for young people to achieve success in all endeavors set before them and that requires the children, parents, educators, and the community to work together in order to prepare the children for the next phase of their academic career.

Expectations

I expect all students to set, plan, and obtain goals in all aspects of their education including academically, socially, and emotionally. We will review and assess those goals and adjust as needed to ensure the students are constantly pushing themselves to be the best version they can be.

My students know that I expect them to try their very best and that I am here to support them through their journey within my classroom as well as out. I am firm, but fair with the understanding that equity does not mean equality.

Allowing students to have second chances shows them that as long as they are changing and adjusting, all goals are always within reach and that is why they should always reach for the stars!
