Math
Everyday Mathematics aims to help students acquire a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts and achieve greater mathematical fluency. This will enable them to become lifelong mathematical thinkers, problem solvers, and collaborators. Through the use of manipulatives and small-group work, combined with instruction I will help build on your learners' experiences and allow them to make connections between their experiences and the discipline of mathematics.
Writing
Students will begin the year by learning about the writer's workshop process. Your young author will publish the following pieces: Personal Narrative, Informational, Fiction Narrative, and an Opinion Essay. Writing will also be integrated into every subject. Students will utilize many techniques including pre-writing, journaling, grammar, spelling, note-taking, revision, and editing. Raisin/Mentor Review will be requested as an integral part of the writing process.
Reading
Students will participate in whole and small-group instruction as well as reading leveled books and novels. We will focus on skills such as predicting, summarizing, inferencing, fluency, and reading for meaning. The only way to become a proficient reader is to practice reading. Daily reading exposes your child to various author styles and genres and should improve their vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The kids will have a chance to check out books from the school library or select books from our classroom collection. If your child would like, he/she may choose to read a book from home for this assignment.
Social Studies
Fifth-grade social studies curriculum provides students with an opportunity to polish up their Geography/Map Skills, study the Revolutionary War, learn more about our Government, and participate in the Discovery Simulation.
Science
This year in science, each child will have the opportunity to think like a scientist! We will focus on several interesting concepts. These concepts include the Scientific Method, Astronomy, Forces & Energy, and Conservation.
D.A.R.E
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons. The D.A.R.E. program is more than just drug prevention education; it teaches students good decision-making skills to help them avoid high-risk behavior to ensure they grow up healthy, safe, and secure. Students will compose an essay or project to celebrate their pledge to live a life free of drugs and alcohol.
