Talon Times October 2022 Edition

The History of Halloween

By Jane. M

Halloween first appeared in the Celtic festival of Samhain. For the Celts, the night of October 31st was a time when the ghosts of the dead returned to Earth. Though they believed that spirits caused damage to crops, they also thought that the presence of ghosts helped their druids (priests) to make predictions about the future.

By the 9th century, Christianity had spread into the Celtic lands and began blending with the local culture. This mix helped create new festivals like All Saints Day and the night before, known as All-Hallows Eve, and eventually, Halloween.

An Early American Halloween had the many modern aspects, like ghost stories and pranking people. By the middle of the 19th century, Halloween-like celebrations were fairly common, but Halloween was not yet celebrated everywhere in the US.

But, in the mid nineteenth century, the Irish potato famine was in full swing. 1.5 million immigrants rushed to the United States, bringing more popularity to the holiday.

In the late 1800's, people started turning away from the older purposes of Halloween, like witchcraft and ghosts, and began spending the holiday at parties and other events, turning the focus towards fun instead of scares.

Today, Halloween is a popular and well-loved holiday, with trick-or-treating, costumes, parties, and more! It's also definitely an American favorite, with people spending over 6 billion on Halloween related things in the US alone.

Hocus Pocus

We all know about the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus, but did you know there is a new one? It just recently came out September 30th, 2022. you really should watch it! I haven't yet but we are all excited! Of course though, if you're going to watch Hocus Pocus 2, why not binge the classic one as well? It's about a brother, sister and friend who explore an abandoned house, and accidentally release a trio of witches whom formerly lived there. With the assistance of a soul trapped in the body of the black cat, they must steal the witches' book of spells in order to stop them from becoming immortal. Now, I won't spoil Hocus Pocus 2 for you, because then there wouldn't be any point in watching the movie, now would there?

Don't let them get lost.

There are so many kids that go through the system that could have trauma from it and have a hard time getting used to a family because they don't know what a family is like. They have been through more then they should. Some may go to a foster home and they only want the money but others also have great success. They get moved from home to home and siblings get separated and they don't see each other. People adopt babies or young kids before they adopt teens. Some of the teens don't go to high school because they move so many times and they get held back for it too. "The NSAP collected information on the child's age at time of placement into the family who adopted them. Overall, 20 percent of children adopted from foster care were six years or older at the time of placement, 45 percent were under one year of age, and 35 percent were between the ages of one and "five years old."

Older children in the U.S. are not as likely to be adopted as younger children. The average age of the U.S. adopted children was about 6.3 years in 2012. For youth age 9 and older, the likelihood of being adopted drops significantly" there is more then that but that is just the basics.

{FUN FORMS} (Real) By Kai Nichol, 8th grade

The doc of Fun Forms

Info: "Fun Forms" is a doc with a bunch of google forms on it. You can complete these forms when you are bored, looking for a debate, not paying attention in class... (I do not recommend doing these during class as you or others participating can get into trouble. Saturday detention anybody?) These forms are both short and long depending on which ones you choose. If one becomes really popular I can expand on that type!

Other info: In the "Sponsorships" area, are forms made by other people. If you would like a chance at *your* form being put there, send me (Kai Nichol) an email with the form's link and your grade (6th, 7th, 8th, teacher).

All of the not guilty people have to use their detective skills and try to find out who the tapper is. If the tapper manages to tap everyone then they win, but if the innocents manage to find out the tapper then they win.

Then have the people put their hands in with a blindfold on and try to guess what's in the bag.
