FYE is a 4-credit course designed to set you up for a successful and meaningful college experience. Through this course, you will explore the structure and purpose of General Education, develop effective study habits, discover ways to get involved on campus, learn how to access support resources, and build critical thinking skills to navigate the expectations of college and professional life.
Below is a brief overview of the FYE Student Learning Outcomes.
You’ll be set up for success by gaining hands-on experience with the essential technologies and information tools used at WCU. From navigating D2L (WCU’s learning management system) and writing professional, college-level emails to using productivity apps like Word, Excel, and Google tools—you’ll build practical skills that support your academic journey. You’ll also learn how to find tech support, evaluate sources effectively, and much more!
You’ll explore the historical, civic, and professional foundations of a Liberal Arts education—and how WCU’s General Education requirements reflect this tradition. FYE introduces evidence-based learning strategies, effective study habits, and behaviors to avoid (and why they matter). You’ll also focus on setting meaningful goals, managing your time wisely, and identifying your personal and professional strengths to help you thrive throughout your college journey.
You’ll learn how to find and make the most of WCU’s academic and personal support resources. FYE will introduce you to the wide range of co-curricular opportunities available—from the Involvement Fair and Career Development Center to the Resource Pantry and the Dowdy Multicultural Center and much more. These experiences are designed to help you connect, grow, and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
You will engage a unique Experiential Learning Project that coincides with your FYE disciplinary focus. Here are some examples of experiential/research topics:
