The elementary Spanish program of Barnard Academy seeks to equip students with communication skills in Spanish, to provide them with the perspectives of those countries where Spanish is spoken, and to prepare them for success in a multilingual economy and society. We understand that language is an innate human capability from which all students benefit. The study of world languages is an interdisciplinary pursuit that intrinsically gives students a global perspective; students gain an increased knowledge of their relationship to the world by developing an appreciation for other viewpoints and a deeper understanding of their own culture and the world.
Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, present information and ideas, express feelings and emotions, and share opinions.
Students understand the relationship between the products and practices of cultures both ancient and modern.
Taking the perspective that language learning is an interdisciplinary pursuit, students use the second language to explore grade level content and areas of interest.
Students understand the nature of language and culture by making comparisons with their own.
By participating in global communities, students will be prepared for success in a multilingual society both at home and around the world.
