WAYS TO ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO BE THE BEST S/HE CAN BE
· Cultivate your child’s early identity as a good student. Many very successful students knew that they were good students early in life. Many said that their families labeled them as good students, and that they loved hearing their parents brag about them.
· Make it clear to your child that accomplishments don’t just happen, that hard work goes along with it.
· When your child has a problem with homework, ask them what they think and work the problem out TOGETHER.
· Admire persistence and process, not just the outcome.
· Show interest in your child’s day. Ask a lot of questions. How was your day? What are you learning about? What was your favorite thing you learned today?
· Attend your child’s performances, athletic events, etc. I know this can be hard with today’s demanding schedules, but it can make a world of difference to your child and boost their confidence and interest.
· Keep in contact with your child’s teacher.
· Help your child understand that rules do exist, and that they exist for a reason.
· Make homework an integral part of the daily routine. Have a set time each day that homework is done. Also have a set place where homework is done, a “special place.”
· Be aware of long-term projects and keep abreast on how they are progressing.
