What are sight words?

Sight words are words that readers are able to recognize by "sight" without having to use strategies to figure out. These are words your child should learn to read and spell automatically. The sight words introduced in first grade are high frequency words (words readers encounter frequently). Some sight words have unusual spelling patterns and cannot be "sounded out" (ex. said) while others follow phonics rules (ex. in, like).

Why are sight words important?

Sight words are an important part of reading acquisition. Knowing sight words well helps children with reading fluency and comprehension.
