WELCOME QUARTER 1 STUDENTS (And Parents!)

Hello parents, guardians and students. I hope you and your families are all well and staying healthy. I am your child’s Clothing teacher for quarter 1 at WJHS. Please feel free to reach out at any time with any question or concern or anything I may be able to help you with. I will be available each school day via email- meegan.shave@wcsdny.org . I will check my email very frequently and respond to your query ASAP ☺! Please read the following information thoroughly.

In an effort to help students, I will be posting assignments weekly. Students can plan their time accordingly throughout the week and get this work done at whatever times/interval they are able to. Due dates will be listed on assignments. Since the class is progressive and each unit of information builds on and includes information from the previous, it makes sense if students complete one weeks assignment before moving on to the next. The assignments are not overwhelming and are minimal. I want to make sure kids can access and be successful. Remember, I am here to help with anything- just reach out if needed.

Generally speaking, there very little homework over the 10 weeks that may require after-school attention and one is the laundry assignment, where students will be responsible for doing 5 loads of laundry. Do not worry if you're hesitant about them washing your clothing, it can be only the laundry that they use- clothing, sheets, towels etc.. SO if they make any mistakes, it is with their own clothes.

My class is a CELL PHONE FREE ZONE- there is no charging, texting, answering phones etc. The phones are to be off and away during class.

Before participation in certain labs, all required work must be done as it is necessary to see that the student understand techniques or safety issues, if the work is not complete, the student may forfeit his/her opportunity to participate in that lab. Therefore it is essential that the student budget his/her time and finish assignments in a timely fashion.

Also since advanced notice is given for all assignments (mostly up to 10-14 days), it is assumed that the assignments will be turned in when the student returns to school. Any late work may be turned in but will have penalty points taken off for the lateness. Thank you.

About the teacher-

Welcome to Clothing, I would like to expose my students to the wonderful world of fibers and sewing. It is full of exciting applications has many day to day pertinence in doing laundry and being able to make small repairs to clothing. I would like my students to feel comfortable mending and have an experience while creating a useful household item (or two).

A Cornell graduate in Biomedical textiles who originally was a protective clothing specialist with the US navy and had to switch careers due to severe allergies, I've enjoyed teaching mostly middle school children for the past 25 years. I am married and have 2 daughters We live in a farmhouse that we are restoring. We have surrounded ourselves with a flock of chickens, 2 cats, a flock of sheep for wool and 2 dogs. I am also an avid quilter, seamstress and painter.

Please feel free to email me with any questions. I have posted the important handouts and homework on this web site. You may also call the school 298-5200 x21125 Thank you.
