Homework
Homework for RTI students Students in LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) groups are expected to read their take-home books each night. These short texts help reinforce strategies and skills that we have worked on in our sessions. Since the children have read the book prior to bringing it home, it should be easy to read. This practice will help build their sight word vocabulary and fluency. Some groups may have a short activity (worksheet) to complete as well. Every other day, one child in the small group will read aloud to me so I can analyze their reading and look for strengths and areas that we need to continue to work on. This type of data will help drive the group's instructional focus. Students in other intervention groups may also bring home short texts to practice their reading. Many groups will be working on fluency - students will be reading to a partner to calculate the number of words they are reading within a specific time period. They will then chart their progress. Other groups may bring home texts to read so we can discuss or write about in the following sessions. All of this assignments will take a very limited amount of time. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions.
Reading is thinking!
When your child is reading to you and gets stuck on a word, try not to tell them right away. Instead, you can help them learn ways to figure out unfamiliar words while building their reading skills and strategies along the way.
Rereading the books that are sent home in their reading bag help enhance your child’s literacy success. This helps them build reading fluency, reinforces strategy use, exposes them to word structure, and helps them understand story elements. The books in their special reading bags also is a way for you to be aware of what reading level your child is working on becoming proficient at. Check out the level on the back of their book and you will see how much progress they are making and sometimes reveals to you how much more work they have to do at a particular level before they can move on.
Anytime is reading time. Each minute you spend, makes a difference. You don't have to sit down for an hour, anytime is the right time. Maybe they will read in the morning and at bedtime. Or read in the middle of a rainy day. And don't forget about using Reading A-Z website. Each child can access their teacher's page and read books online. There are also comprehension quizzes to take! If you are having difficulty, please send me an email and I will try to help!
