FIRST is an acronym for "For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology" and it is a network that supports informal STEM Education through the organization of Robotics Competitions. You can find out more HERE.
FIRST has several levels of competition based both on age as well as budget:
FIRST LEGO League: Using LEGO as a medium, teams explore basic robotics and other STEM concepts while coming up with solutions to problems in our everyday lives. There are 3 levels of FLL:
DISCOVER: Grades K-1 - A basic understanding of LEGO and coding and working in teams collaboratively
EXPLORE: Grades 2-4 - More in depth LEGO robotics and the teams work on a model that is a solution to a tech problem that society faces
- Myers Corners Elementary School has one of these teams, taught by our very own Lyndsey Wells!
CHALLENGE: Grades 4-8 - Competitive LEGO Robotics program with STEM Research projects and a new game every year.
- We had these in both of our Jr. High Schools before COVID but have yet to restart them -- are there any coaches who are up to the challenge?
You can find out more about FIRST LEGO League HERE.
FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION: Grades 9-12 - STADIUM SPORT ROBOTICS!
Find out more about it HERE.
FIRST TECH CHALLENGE: Grades 7-12 - FIRST's newest and most impactful robotics competition , students work in teams to build a robot to win a new game every year. They document their work extensively, and there is a focus on STEM outreach to local and professional communities. This is the type of competition that we are hosting at JJHS.
