Electrolytes in the Body
Electrolytes are substances that carry an electric charge and are essential for maintaining various bodily functions. They play crucial roles in regulating fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, and bone health.
Examples of Electrolytes in the body:
Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Chloride (Cl- ), Calcium (Ca2+), Magnesium (Mg2+), Phosphate (P3-), and Bicarbonate (HCO3-).
Sodium: Regulates fluid balance, blood pressure, and nerve and muscle function.
Potassium: Maintains fluid balance, supports heart function
Chloride: Contributes to fluid balance, maintains blood pH, and supports nerve function.
Calcium: Calcium has a significant physiological role in the body. It is involved in skeletal mineralization, contraction of muscles, the transmission of nerve impulses, blood clotting, and secretion of hormones.
Magnesium: Involves in muscle and nerve function, regulates blood sugar, and supports bone health.
Phosphate: Forms bones and teeth, participates in energy metabolism, and regulates cell function.
Bicarbonate: Maintains blood pH balance and regulates carbon dioxide transport.
