A Chromebook is a small laptop specifically designed to access the Internet.
It runs on the Chrome operating system, which resembles the Google Chrome Internet browser.
Through the District’s use of Google Apps for Education, Chromebooks utilize Internet resources, specialized apps, and software for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations similar to Microsoft Office.
The Chromebooks are to be used as a learning tool across all subject areas. The use of a variety of apps and Internet resources allows students to digitally communicate, collaborate, and create in the classroom. Students are using the Chromebooks to:
Gain hands on experience with the latest collaboration and productivity tools
Sharpen organizational skills and time management skills with Google Drive and Google Calendar
Design and build websites
Create Presentations
Read online books and textbooks
Create Research Papers
All students work through Wappingers Central School District's student Google domain, which has the same filtering safeguards as the District's Internet.
With a one-to-one program, students have increased access to technology and the opportunity to work collaboratively with teachers and classmates.
Student work is saved on Google Drive, which makes it accessible from any computer with an Internet connection. No additional software is required.
Parents can access their child’s work and view content by using their child’s username and password from any Internet-enabled device.
Teachers receive professional development throughout each school year to develop their knowledge and skills in relation to Google Apps for Education.
If your child has a device that is malfunctioning and/or damaged, please contact us at parent.portal@wcsdny.org and we will be happy to assist. In your email, please include:
Your child's name.
The 6-digit tag number found on the sticker on the bottom of the device
The issue you are expiring.
Whether or not you purchased insurance for the device.
Once reported, students should return the device to the Computer Lab TA immediately. We understand that things happen and breakage is unfortunately expected. Upon analysis by the technology staff, it will be determined whether or not the device was damaged or if it was a manufacturing defect.
When submitting their device for repair, students will be assigned a temporary device for use which they will need to return at the end of each school day until their original device can be repaired or replaced.
The optional Chromebook Protection Plan costs $29 Annually. The policy covers the following:
Accidental Damage (Drops and Spills)
Cracked Screen
Liquid Submersion
Fire, Flood and Natural Disaster
Power Surge By Lightning
Theft and Vandalism
