Geometry Plus - Remote Learning Outline
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!! I hope that you had a wonderful summer and are ready for the start of the new school year. I am really looking forward to working with you! Below are some very important things that will help you be successful in math this year and I ask that you and your parents/guardians read them over.
Supply list:
1. 3 Ring Binder with loose leaf OR Notebook for notes and assignments.
2. Pencils and/or Pens
3. Graphing Calculator - Although this is not mandated, if you would like to purchase a graphing calculator for home use it would help or you may download Calculate84 to help you complete assignments at home. If you have a Chromebook you can download a TI-84 calculator for free. Do not buy the TI-89 as they are not allowed on any NYS Math Regents.
4. Optional: Printer to print out assignments and notes
Remote Learning Class Expectations:
Our school day will be split into two parts consisting of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students are expected to participate in both faucets of instruction.
Synchronous Learning : Period 2: 8:40am -9:05am Period 5: 10:10am - 10:35am
Lab Period 3: 9:10am - 9:35am Lab Period 6: 10:40am - 11:05am
We will be meeting as a class each day. At that time attendance will be taken and students will be engaged in mathematical lessons. Students are expected to be logged into Google Meet on time and ready to learn. Frequent absenteeism will be reported to administration. You are responsible for any missed work.
Remote Grading:
Computing Averages – A student can determine their average at any time by adding up all of the points they have earned and dividing by the total number of points they could have earned. Then multiply that number by 100 to find your average.
The number of points each assignment is worth will depend on its length and the type of assignment.
Mon/Wed Assignments will be checked.
• If all problems are complete and or/ attempted, 2 points are earned.
• If incomplete, 0 points are earned.
Tues/Thurs Assignments will be graded. Each assignment will be worth 5 points.
• For example: If you get 4 out of 5 questions correct you will receive a grade of ⅘.
Friday Assignment/Assessment will range in point value (10-20 pts.) depending on the number of questions and the rigor involved.
Independent Practice/Classwork (ASynchronous Learning):
Doing independent practice is important for you to succeed in this course.
*Assignments will be posted on Google Classroom along with notes and other materials.
*Classwork will be assigned every day and should be submitted by the due date.
*If you miss a class it is your responsibility to get the assignment completed.
*We strongly suggest you show your work on paper to help determine the correct answer.
Classroom Participation: Our classroom will be a positive learning environment where all students are welcome, valued and prepared. The foundation for our community is the execution and observation of behavior that follows John Jay’s School Wide Expectations:
Collaborate
Respect
Engage
Act Appropriately
Manage Time Effectively
Excel
Lab:
Lab will be used to help supplement what we are doing in our Geometry class. It is a Pass or Fail class. This means attendance is key to passing this course. We will be practicing topics we do in Geometry as well and fine tune the algebra skills used in the Geometry course. Most work will be done during our synchronous class, but I will send out a google form twice a week to be filled in by your child. This will reflect directly what we do together during lab time.
Students are to expect consequences for misbehavior including those listed in the code of conduct.
*To engage and excel in the classroom, cell phones and other electronic devices are to be put away during live sessions.
Assessments: Geometry students will take the NYS Common Core Geometry Regents Examination in June. This Regents exam will be the final examination for the course and count as 20% of your final average.
Attendance: Attendance is required. Students are expected to be logged into Google Meet, on time and ready to learn. Frequent absenteeism will be reported to administration. You are responsible for any missed work.
Extra Help:
I am available by request. Please ask me directly to schedule a time for additional help (1:15-2:25). Students are encouraged to use email for questions.
