AIS Mathematics and Reading

Welcome to Math and Reading AIS! I look forward to a wonderful year ahead.

What is AIS? AIS stands for Academic Intervention Services. Depending on individual needs, students will receive either small group or 1:1 instruction.

For math, we use a program called, "Do the Math." It provides students with hands-on learning to develop skills in

  • computation accuracy and efficiency

  • number sense

  • mathematical reasoning

  • problem-solving skills

In addition, we use TangMath. Following the C-P-A model, students will move sequentially from concrete models, to pictorial representations, to abstract algorithms. We incorporate fun games and puzzles to master concepts and build fluency,

For reading, we used leveled readers to focus on a variety of decoding, comprehension, and fluency strategies.

What is your teaching philosophy? My philosophy can be summed up in a few quotes:

  • Love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort and keep on learning. ~ Carol Dweck

  • The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.” ~ Winston Churchill

  • Smart is something you become, not something you are.

  • If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow. ~ John Dewey

  • If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its life thinking that it is a failure.

  • Fair isn’t everybody getting the same thing...Fair is everybody getting what they need in order to be successful.

  • They may forget what you said, but they will not forget how you made them feel. ~ Carl W. Buechner

I work hard to help students achieve a growth mindset. Students have an innate fear of making mistakes, when in fact, mistakes are one of the best ways to help brains grow. I want students to believe that they can achieve anything with hard work, dedication and a belief in themselves. In my classroom, it's not about perfection, it's about progress. WE CAN DO HARD THINGS!
