What is Photography?

The word Photograph itself comes from the combination of the Greek words Photos; meaning ‘light’, and Graphe; meaning ‘drawing’. So we can therefore think of photography as ‘Drawing with Light’.

For a brief history of photography, take a look at this TED-Ed talk from Eva Timothy:

Photography is both Art and Science. The advent of digital mobile cameras has made anyone with a mobile device a photographer.

The idea of using primitive cameras to view images is thought to date back to around the 4th century BCE, but it wasn’t until the 19th century that the art of permanently recording the images through a chemical process was perfected.

In 1975, Kodak produced the world's first digital camera, giving birth to the idea of digital photography, and since then it’s steadily become one of the most popular forms of visual expression. Combining this with the significant influence of the rise of the smartphone, it’s not surprising that the human race took an estimated 1.2 trillion digital photographs in 2017.
