In June 2024, the Virginia Department of Education implemented the current set of Computer Science Standards. You can find those standards by grade level K-8 along with the curriculum framework by clicking this link:

If you need an idea for a library class activity that incorporates the Computer Science Standards, check out this page of activity ideas. Each activity includes the exact set of Computer Science Standards that are incorporated into this activity by grade level for easy reference.
1.Technology Concentration Game: (Grades 3-5) This game is a review activity geared for 1st and 2nd grade. Students play a game of matching numbers on the Concentration game board to locate hidden technology items used in school.
2. Eye Guess: (Grades 3-5) This game is a review activity geared for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Students play a game of memorization where they must answer questions about technology. The catch is that the students must remember where the answers are located on the board.
3. City Guesser: (Grades 3-12) This is a great geography activity that teaches students how to use Google Maps. Students watch a video of a particular location in the world. They must guess where they are located by clicking on the map. This activity can be teacher-led or student-led.
4. Typing.com: (Grades 3-8) This is a typing program consisting of a series of typing exercises for beginner, intermediate, and advanced level learning. Students will learn correct hand placement when typing on their device. This activity can be teacher or student-led.
5. Code.org: (Grades K-12) This site includes a variety of coding activites using Hour of Code and other programs. Students will learn the basics of coding by placing command blocks on a board to manipulate characters on the screen. No sign in is required by students to use.
6. Blockly Games Coding: (Grades 2-8) This site includes 8 activities that students complete using coding command blocks. No sign in is required by the students to use. This activity can be teacher or student-led.
7. CS First Coding: (Grades 4-12) This is a more advanced coding program. Students will place command coding blocks to create stories and animated sequences.
8. Google My Maps: (Grades 3-12) Students can use this activity to create a story map of a book they have read (fiction or non-fiction). The students place markers on a Google Map to show the places where their book took place. This actitivity can also be used to allow students to create their own stories and a map where that story takes place.
9. Internet Searches Activities: (5th Grade) This activity is geared specifically for 5th grade students. Students will answer a series of questions by conducting a search across the internet to find the best search engines and websites to find the answers to these questions.
Here is a one hour video demonstrating the various Ideas for Library Activities Using the Computer Science Standards that was presented at the VSTE Conference on December 10, 2024. In this video, you will see demonstrations of activities such as Technology Concentration, Eye Guess, Nailing Technology, Library Bowling, CityGuesser, Blockly Coding, and CS First Coding.
