Woods Creek Elementary School offers weekly nurturing and enrichment services for Kindergarten through 2nd grade students who need more advanced learning. These services are provided for English Language Arts and/or Mathematics. If selected by their current grade-level professional learning team, these students are placed into the Nurturing program. These groups of students may fluctuate many times throughout the year depending on each student's needs. Kindergarten students are pulled for 20 minutes for each subject needed per week. First and second grade students are pulled for 30 minutes for each subject needed per week.
The Wake County AIG Program supports Explorers, another unique nurturing component for 2nd Grade. The AIG teachers work with second grade teachers, evaluating various experiences designed to elicit higher academic performance. During the first quarter, the AIG teacher pushes into each 2nd grade classroom to work with all students to elicit higher learning potential. During these experiences, the AIG and the classroom teachers collaborated on students' higher learning activities to identify students with higher levels of critical thinking. During the 2nd Quarter, students who demonstrate high performance in English Language Arts and Mathematics will be pulled out in small group enrichment activities with the AIG teacher. Some students may participate in one or more small group experiences, while others may not demonstrate a need for this enrichment.
All 2nd grade students will be asked to take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in the fall. Students who score 85% or higher on any CogAT subtest will be asked to take the IOWA Achievement Test later in the fall. Both of these tests are used to determine AIG Identification eligibility. Any 2nd grade student who scores 95% or higher on their Cognitive Abilities Test will be identified as Intellectually Gifted (IG). Any 2nd grade student who scores 95% or higher on the IOWA Achievement Test will be identified as Academically Gifted (AG). Any student that scores 95% or higher on both tests will be identified as Academically and Intellectually (AIG) gifted. All three identifications will receive the same services. Any 2nd grade student identified as AIG/IG/AG will begin receiving pull-out AIG services in their identified area of English Language Arts and/or Mathematics during the latter half of the second semester.
AIG pulled-out services require AIG identification. Direct instruction from the AIG teacher is provided for students identified as gifted in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics. Talent Development students are invited to attend these sessions as well. These meetings occur 1-2 times weekly for 45-90 minutes. AIG direct services are based on higher-level differentiated common core grade-level standards.
Some students may need more time to develop their academic giftedness and may not have been AIG identified yet. These students are still eligible for AIG testing if they demonstrate level 4 and higher academic performance than their same-aged peers. These students can be nominated by their parents or their classroom teacher. The 3rd, 4th & 5th grade AIG Nomination Window is always open. We are currently taking teacher and/or parent nominations. If interested, please talk to your student's classroom teacher and email Mrs. Stone at astone@wcpss.net.
All AIG nominations must be emailed to Mrs. Stone. Fall AIG nomination and testing dates for AIG Nomination deadlines are set to allow the school to schedule a School-Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) meeting. All nominations are discussed at this meeting, and the SBCGE committee decides whether testing is appropriate for each nominee. After the meeting, all testing materials are ordered and prepared individually for each student that will be tested. A testing schedule is set up, and parents are notified. The AIG teacher administers all testing. AIG testing results are usually back in one month. Mrs. Stone will send home the AIG results and inform parents of their student's AIG status. Students who score 95% or higher on their Cognitive Abilities Test will be identified as Intellectually Gifted (IG). Any student who scores 95% or higher on the IOWA Achievement Test will be identified as Academically Gifted (AG). Any student that scores 95% or higher on both tests will be identified as Academically and Intellectually (AIG) gifted. All three identifications will receive the same services. AIG/IG/AG pull-out services will begin immediately.
