Message from Mrs. Price

With our paired partnership of enthusiasm, we will have an exciting year filled with new experiences, challenges, and rewards. My classroom is a place of learning to enrich and strengthen fifth grade learners. I look forward to giving each of my students a wide range of learning experiences through novel studies that are integrated with  global connections to help  them  become " Global Explorers"  that take action throughout the year.

Mrs. Price has been at Wiley for twenty years. She teaches Language Arts for all fifth-grade students. She is looking forward to another great year interacting with her students where new exciting adventures await. This year she will also teach Social Studies for all fifth graders.

Mrs. Price earned a BS in Education from Peru State College (the oldest teaching college west of the Mississippi). She also obtained a Masters from SDSU in Curriculum and Development.  Mrs. Price has taught in Germany, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and South Dakota before coming to North Carolina. Having taught not only in the United States, but in Europe and the Middle East, she blends global experiences into her teaching. She also integrates storytelling into her teaching which encourages her students to express and elaborate their ideas in their written responses.

Mrs. Price began traveling internationally at the age of five. She still loves to travel internationally, as well as stateside. When you speak with her, you will sense her enthusiasm for teaching as well as the desire to bring many global experiences into her classroom. Once you have visited her classroom, you not only see the global connections, but you will also sense her desire to take her students on global adventures. This year Jill Molloy, AIG teacher, will be a co-teacher with Mrs. Price for ELA. and they will once again incorporate several of the UN Sustainability Development Goals of 2030. By using novel studies,  they will incorporate many of the goals by taking "action steps" throughout the year. The first novel, Esperanza Rising will help students study several of the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Children Rights as related to the Esperanza Rising, and the connection to the United Nation's Sustainable Development. Students will focus on the different goals throughout the year. Students will also make connections to their assigned continent South America.

This year also brings new technology across the district for elementary school students. It is an online program called Canvas. Students will learn to use the program along with her. Mrs. Price said, "I have done prep work over the summer to prepare the first two units for quarter one. So it is going to be an exciting new tech year for all of us.  We may have a few road bumps, but that just means moving slower and continuing on with confidence. "

Mrs. Price is an avid reader. A few of her favorite books are Esperanza Rising, and Fever 1793. Other novels she has enjoyed reading include House of the Scorpion, Seraphina, The Giver, The Lightning Queen, The City of Ember Series, and The Hunger Games. Mrs. Price's favorite adult author is James Patterson. She has all of his books in her personal library.

Summer activities have included seeing her grandson graduate from college. For her students, Mrs. Price has reviewed and updated her curriculum and her Canvas website. Also, she has researched new ideas and book studies to engage students with activities that will strengthen and enrich their learning experiences in fifth grade.

In the last few years, her summer activities included rafting, zip lining, helicoptering over the "Crazy Horse" monument, boating,  NASCAR driving, and spending a couple of weeks at the beach with family. Mrs. Price's hobbies/interests include activities with her family, traveling, reading, writing, quilting, painting/drawing,  and, of course, living life to the fullest.

The fifth grade team this year will be Mrs. Price (ELA and Social Studies), and Mrs. Bailey (Science/Math). They have worked together for two years. They are two peas in a pod; they make a fantastic fifth grade team.
