What Do School Counselors Do?

School Counselors...

  • Work with students, teachers, staff members, administration, parents, and the community to help support the academic, social, emotional, and any other needs of students

  • Teach classroom guidance lessons across grade levels to teach students about emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, bullying, academic skills, career information, college access, personal safety, internet safety, and more!

  • Conduct small groups to support students who need extra guidance for social skills, test anxiety, divorce, grief, and more!

  • Meet students individually through self-referrals, teacher and staff referrals, and parent referrals

  • Manage 504 plans

  • Make referrals to outside agencies when students and families need additional support

  • Provide mental health services during crises

  • Provide support for students and families as they transition from elementary school to middle school, and middle to high school

  • Utilize data to design interventions made to meet the needs of the student population

  • Help with Career and College planning
