MATH
Q2 Focus - This unit focuses on skip counting, which will be developed as students work within a variety of areas of math such as adding, telling time and working with arrays. Through work with array models, students use the repeated addition of the rows and columns as a more efficient way to count. Counting the items in an array is a form of skip counting. Students will also practice skip counting as they tell time to the nearest five minutes. Tools such as number lines and hundred charts should be used as support.
Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes. (NC.2.MD.7)
Count within 100 by 5s and 10s. (NC.2.NBT.2)
Use addition to find the total number of objects in a rectangular array with up to 5 rows and 5 columns. (NC.2.OA.4)
Read and write numbers within 1,000 using number names, base ten numerals, and expanded form. ( NC. 2.NBT.3
Compare two three-digit numbers based on the value of the hundreds, ten & ones. (NC.2.NBT.4)
Use >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. (NC.2.NBT.4)
MATH
Q3 Focus In 2nd Grade, students add up to three two-digit numbers, add and subtract within 1,000, and mentally add and subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900, using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, concrete models or drawings, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Additionally, they solve word problems of the following types: one-step add to/take from-start unknown, one-step compare- bigger unknown, one-step compare- smaller unknown, two-step (involving single digits) add to/take from- change unknown, two-step (involving single digits) add to/take from- result unknown.
Write equations where the unknown represents the context of the problem. (NC.2.OA.1).
Show how strategies work (NC.2.NBT.7).
Demonstrate and explain why addition and subtraction strategies work using pictures, numbers, or words. (NC.2.NBT.7).
Solve problems mentally when adding and subtracting ten and one hundred (NC.2.NBT.8)
Determine an efficient strategy when adding and subtracting (NC.2.NBT.7)
Q 3/4 Focus
Linear Measurement
Students will understand that:
. Tools are used to measure the length of objects with precision. (NC.2.MD.1)
The size of the unit of measure impacts the number of units needed to measure an object.(NC.2.MD.2)
The mathematical difference of two numbers is the amount of space between the numbers. (NC.2.MD.4)
Students will be able to:
Use tools in order to precisely measure objects. (NC.2.MD.1)
Compare the measured lengths of an object after using two different units to measure. (NC.2.MD.2)
Describe how two measurements of one object relate to the size of the unit used to measure. (NC.2.MD.2)
Estimate lengths using appropriate standard units of measure. (NC.2.MD.3)
Find and determine the difference between length in a given unit. (NC.2.MD.4)
Use addition and subtraction to solve 1 step word problems involving measurement within 100. (NC.2.MD.5)
Use addition and subtraction to solve 2-step word problems involving single digits within the context of measurement. (NC.2.OA.1)
