General Information

Grading

MidTerm and Final Exams

This course will include a comprehensive mid-term assessment that will count for 10% of the final grade.

All courses will include a comprehensive written final examination that will count for 20% of the final grade. All final examinations will occur during the school-wide scheduled final exam window.

Seniors who meet certain attendance and average requirements may be exempt from a teacher-made final exam.

Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is an essential principle of any academic program that enhances an educational organization’s credibility and position as a leader. As stated in the IB learner profile, all members of the GMHS community strive to be “principled,” acting with “integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities.” In all their studies, students must demonstrate academic honesty and avoid any form of academic misconduct. Each student’s understanding of academic honesty is documented by completion of the Academic Integrity Canvas course. Subject Specific Information

NC Math 1

Course Description

NC Math 1 deepens and extends understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential and quadratic phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. In addition to studying bivariate data, students also summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable. The Geometry standards that appear in this course formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences to explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. The Standards for Mathematical Practice apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, require that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. This course fulfills the North Carolina high school graduation requirement for Common Core Math I. The final exam is the North Carolina End -of-Course Test based on the Common Core Math 1 Standards. This course does require extra time working outside of the normal class period. Parents should ensure their child is completing the work and studying on a daily basis to guarantee success.

NC math 4 Honors

Course Description

NC Math 4 provides students an in-depth study of modeling and applying functions. Home, work, recreation, consumer issues, public policy and scientific investigations are just a few of the areas from which applications will originate. Some of the topics that we will cover are: statistics, probability, recursion, regression, exponential and logarithmic functions, power and polynomial functions, trigonometric functions, and other topics as time allows.

AP PreCalculus

Course Description

AP Precalculus provides students an in-depth study of trigonometry and applications of functions. Many topics covered in Math 1-3 will be extended as students are prepared for AP Calculus/college math courses. Continuity and limits will be introduced and solidified throughout the course as a bridge to further math courses. Projects completed will provide real world and scientific applications of the mathematical concepts explored.
