Meet Mr. Wood: A Dedicated Educator and Community Leader
He, currently a social studies teacher for the 8-2 and 8-3 classes, plays an essential role at our school. His passion for social studies began in his own school days, and after the challenges of COVID-19, he decided to pursue teaching in this field—a choice that felt like a natural fit.
In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Wood serves as the Student Council advisor. Early last year, when Ms. Hanna sent out an email seeking a new advisor, Mr. Wood, who had previously held this role at his former school, stepped up to lead. As Student Council advisor, he has the opportunity to witness Lufkin Road students embracing leadership roles, drawing from his own experience as vice president in 8th grade and freshman representative in 9th grade.
Beyond the classroom, Mr. Wood is actively involved in youth sports as a referee. He officiates middle and high school games in football, basketball, and soccer. His journey into officiating began in college, encouraged by a roommate who was an official. Initially, it was a way to earn extra money as a college student, but after a 15-year hiatus, he returned to refereeing five years ago. He enjoys it not only for the supplemental income but also because, as he says, “It's also a great way to exercise” (Wood). You might have even seen him officiate the faculty versus students basketball game during the winter pep rally!
Mr. Wood is an active and valued member of our community, excelling as a teacher, advisor, and referee. Interestingly, social studies is not the only subject he teaches; he has also taught religious studies at Gardner-Webb University.
