Meet Mr. Morris
He is a 7th-grade science and math teacher, as well as the basketball coach at Lufkin Road Middle School. He has been teaching there for five years and has worked in Wake County for a total of six. He enjoys teaching because he loves helping students understand difficult concepts—especially when they’re stuck—and witnessing the “lightbulb moment” when it finally clicks. His passion for education stems from his desire to help students reach their full potential, both academically and personally. Teaching also gives him the flexibility to coach basketball, another one of his passions. One of the easiest and most enjoyable parts of teaching for Mr. Morris is creating interactive activities or games that introduce friendly competition into the classroom. He enjoys turning classic games like Jeopardy or Clue into educational experiences for his students. This is especially true when he's teaching science, a subject he prefers over math. One of his favorite lessons is a lab that demonstrates what happens when someone receives the wrong blood type—a hands-on activity that always captures students’ interest. Mr. Morris sees AI as a powerful tool in education. He believes it can greatly support students with assignments or projects by offering accessible help when needed. He also hopes to see the return of Flocabulary, a program he found versatile and engaging for students across different subjects. Despite the joys of teaching, Mr. Morris admits there are challenges. He finds it disheartening when he plans an exciting activity, only for it to be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. However, the hardest part of the job, he says, is the end of the school year—saying goodbye to the students he’s gotten to know and watch grow. Still, he views this moment as bittersweet, as it also marks the beginning of a new journey with another group of students, full of potential and promise
