Studying can be a struggle when your brain keeps urging you to check your phone, scroll through social media, or start playing Minecraft. Many students experience this every time they sit down to focus. Fortunately, there are simple and effective strategies to study efficiently, stay focused, and succeed in school without giving up all your fun.
The first important step to better studying is to remove all electronic devices from your study area. Without phones, tablets, or computers nearby, your brain won’t expect or crave those distractions. Creating a clean and simple study environment trains your mind to focus only on schoolwork. If removing devices isn't possible, turning them off completely or leaving them in another room is another strong option.
Another strategy is to set timers for how long you will spend on each assignment. For example, set a timer for 30 minutes and challenge yourself to work on only one assignment during that time. This technique is called “time blocking” and is known to improve concentration. If you go over the timer, it’s okay — the goal is to keep moving steadily without rushing. Focusing on just one task at a time also reduces the overwhelming feeling that can come from thinking about all the homework you have to do. Stress leads to faster exhaustion, and exhaustion leads to poor study habits, so it’s important to manage it early.
