On April 17th, half of the sixth grade track one students went on a science field trip to the Agapé Center in Fuquay-Varina. The Agapé Center is an organization that shows kids the many ecosystems in the mixed forest. At 9:30 AM we left to go to the field trip bus.
The bus ride to the area was around thirty minutes and not too chaotic. Once we arrived at the center, they gave us our name tags and told us the rules. We were then assigned chaperones and then headed into the forest surrounding the center.
The first ecosystem we went to was the meadow, which was very quiet and peaceful. At the meadow we did many measurements such as soil pH, ground temperature and types of plants and animals. Next, we went to the main part of the mixed forest. A mixed forest has both coniferous and deciduous trees in it.
We did the same measurements in the forest, but it had different results. We then went near the marsh, though we couldn’t go in since it is a water ecosystem. We took the measurements again and it was much different than the others. Next, we left the forest and returned to the main center. At the end of it we learned about beavers and then finally went back to Lufkin.
Overall I think the trip was good and that it was worth going to. The trip also served as a good review of the ecology topics we were studying in science.
