Throughout the 6th grade school year, together, we will be learning about the very first civilizations to pop-up around the world. An excellent way to organize the abundance of information that will be working with this year, we have decided to focus on an organizational structure that uses the acronym G.R.A.P.E.S. Each letter of G.R.A.P.E.S. correlates with a specific aspect that helped (and sometimes hurt) a civilization as it rose to dominance &/or fell from glory.
GEOGRAPHY- We will center around the geography of the locations in which each ancient civilization spawned. We will discuss why they began where they did and how the geography impacted the growth of various civilizations.
RELIGION- We will evaluate how a civilization's religion factored into the decisions that were made, why religion had such a large impact on each civilization, and how each civilization might have been different if religion played a different role.
ACHIEVEMENTS- This unit centers around the achievements & accomplishments of the first civilizations to begin on Earth. As we look closely at the many unique civilizations from the Aztecs to the Romans, we will make observations and organize the successes of each in an effort to assess the growth and regional dominance.
POLITICS- Then next aspect of G.R.A.P.E.S. focuses on the wide variety of political structures that could be found throughout history. We will learn about everything from Egyptian Theocracy, to the Medieval Feudalism and we will even take a good look at the first hints of democracy.
ECONOMICS- Our class will look at the economic aspects of the Silk Road that stretched from China, throughout Europe as well as the many individualized economic structures put in place as groups of people advanced into a more modern form of buying & selling.
SOCIAL STRUCTURES- We will begin to recognize certain social structures that stretched on for thousands of years that were only broken within the last 100 years. We will also be able to identify similarities & differences between the various civilizations.
