Battle of the Books
March 16, 2024 at Apex Friendship Middle School!
Our Battle of the Books team did an awesome job reading all the books and preparing for competition on Saturday at Apex Friendship. We played 8 rounds and finished with 115 points, including 2 we earned through a tense 3 minute challenge where Violet Shipman had to find a specific line in a huge book. Although we didn’t win, it was a great year of reading and fun!
Love to read?
Starting in fall of 2024, we will read 20 *AWESOME* books and memorize their authors/titles. Then we will discuss the books, finding very specific questions in each. By January, we'll start quizzing each other with these facts, in what we call "Mock Battles" and select our team, announced in late January. In late Februrary or early March, we'll battle other middle schools in Wake county to find a champion!
We will meet from 3:30-4:30 in the library on ________ (day of the week).
Starting January 10, we will meet every Wednesday until our County-wide battle at
Apex Friendship Middle on Saturday, March 16 at 8 AM.
When school starts, stop by the library for the permission form and book list. Sign and bring back before our introductory meeting on ____________ at 3:30 (after the last bus). If you're up for the challenge, you'll join our Canvas Classroom for activities, collaborative files, and meeting reminders or cancellations. If you're interested, visit or email Mrs. Thrash at ethrash@wcpss.net to join.
What is BoB?
We play games to get to know author/titles, and will start mock battles as soon as we have read enough books.
Even before reading, you can play Quizlet Author/Title Games in our Canvas Classroom
When you read a book, keep notes and mark pages in the book with ideas for details and questions!
Notes will help you remember books once we start our battles. We also want you to write questions so you can think about the books you read, and how some might be similar.

Thanks, and Go EAGLE Readers!
Reedy Creek's Internal Competition:
Only six students can compete in the county level battles. Twelve are allowed to be on our roster at Apex Friendship for the competition. To be chosen for our team of 12, your coaches will consider these factors:
Attendance at biweekly and weekly meetings. You won't be able to be in a Winter Sport. AND let us know if you intend to play spring sports as we will coordinate with spring sports coaches to miss no more than 1 meeting.
Book Count, quantified by the number of questions you write and how good they are.
Score 100% correct on our written Authors/Title Test.
How well you work with your team to successfully answer questions during our Mock Battles that begin in January.
Positive attitude and valuing our competition during club meetings.
Don't be discouraged if you don't make the cut of 12. We will all enjoy the journey of reading, discussing, and battling to prepare to take on the other middle schools this fall!
Team History
February 25, 2023 at Apex Friendship Middle School!
We lead through the break, dominating in our early competitions, but lost a close one to the host, Apex Friendship. We hosted the event and were very close to winning it all... we keep coming in 2nd or 3rd!
Reedy Creek's 3rd place team in April 2022!
We hosted the event as our first post-covid get-together. 7 teams were here and we played between the gym and auditorium. The teams were so tight and we were very close to winning it all. Every single point counts, doesn't it?

Online Competition:
Staff and Students - Turn all screens on so we can see your face during the entire competition. Work now to find a good place in your home for wifi signal and less distractions.
Only have the Google Classroom Meet Tab open in your browser/computer
Breakout rooms are created at the beginning of play, we’ll put you in the rooms after each question and set the 1 minute timer.
Do one practice first, to go in and out of the breakout rooms.
You can use this idea/template to create a slide showing your school or library. This screen will be shared in the main meet. Here is an example of virtual "tables"
Librarians should share this with each other to add the name of each student in the order called, like their table signs, along with parenthesis and phonetic spelling if needed.
Both teams go to the room and come back with an answer (and a backup for rebound answer for the 2nd team). When the minute timer alerts you to 20 seconds left, come back to main meet to have your player answer.
This gives you a few seconds longer than normal but we realize it takes time to get everyone in the meet. If students haven’t come back by the 1 minute timer, the answer will be considered wrong and the other team will get a try.
All judging is up to the Away Librarian reading the questions.
Only the student who has been asked can answer the question.
Students should not touch their computer keyboard during the entire battle, except when choosing to leave breakout room. If we see you typing, you could be disqualified.
No BoB books or printed lists within your sight.
We will complete 2 rounds of battles.
Rules are subject to change as we navigate our new battle situation but will be emailed to all involved.
