What is Tiger Academy
Tiger Academy uses the principles of the AVID nonprofit organization which provides educators with proven, real-world strategies to accelerate the performance of underrepresented students so that these students and ALL students across the entire campus succeed in college, career, and life. Tiger Academy helps prepare underrepresented students for admission to a four-year college or university. The program fosters a safe culture along with high expectations for teachers and students. Participating students take a Study Skills elective throughout middle and possibly high school.
Tiger Academy Study Skills Elective Course Description
Tiger Academy is an academic elective designed to provide support to students who are in the “academic middle." This course prepares students to enter and be successful in high school and beyond through career and college exploration. Tiger Academy students apply to be in the program and interview with teachers before being accepted into the program.
During the Study Skills class, students receive instruction in:
reading/writing across the curriculum

Testimonial Video
This is a college student who matriculated through a program modeled on the same principals as Tiger Academy.
My name is Jenelle Preston and I have been a teacher in the WCPSS for 22 years. Prior to entering the classroom, I was an educational enrichment site coordinator and manager for several City of Raleigh Housing communities. I have a passion for helping students to see beyond society's expectations through academic achievement. I am excited to help facilitate the RBMS Tiger Academy experience this year and hopefully inspire excellence by exposing students to college life and other learning experiences.
