While a lot of the girls started out a little shy to share, regardless of there intro or extroverted personalities, by the end of our sessions in March, we had reached a high in student engagement and found that the girls were excited to read and even more so for the conversations we had that followed. We created a safe space and security in the lives of these kids where there previously was none if only a little. The relationships that I've cultivated with these girls is something worthy of lasting a lifetime and the only thing I would change about it is getting to be with them and holding our sessions for longer as I feel not only did it help them, but I learned a lot as well. While I still visit them on occasion, it's not the same as getting to spend the quality time of our past Wednesdays and I hope to start back volunteering with them as well as speaking with those at SERES to possibly implement a program like this again over the summer. In doing so it is my hope that more youth can get involved and the kids won't lose their newly learned skills after lack of review, as they will be out of school for the summer and won't have brushed up on these topics since March. By implementing these programs, I can continue to make a change in their lives and by getting other teens involved I can help promote change and give them the opportunity to gain change in theirs, as the relationships we have built go both ways, and we learn so much from the youth as well!
