SPOTLIGHT TEXTS THIS YEAR ARE...
Students read the novel, Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai, and analyze how critical incidents reveal the nature of the main character. Students will analyze the impact of specific word choice on tone and meaning. They also will read informational texts to learn more about the history of war in Vietnam. Students will work in research groups to study the experiences of refugees from one of several cultures and then write two, researched-based free verse narrative poems.
Summary. A Midsummer Students read and analyze Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, focusing on theme and character development. Students build background knowledge as they explore the appeal and authorship of Shakespeare. They also compare a film version of the play with Shakespeare’s original script. Students write an argumentative essay. They will conclude the module by writing a narrative from the point of view of one of the characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Throughout the module, students will engage in discussions about Shakespeare, his universal appeal and the themes within the play.
Students read the memoir, A Mighty Long Way by Carlotta Walls, LaNier and Lisa Frazier Page and a photo essay titled Little Rock Girl 1957 by Shelley Tougas and consider the different ways in which the story of the Little Rock Nine has been told. They begin by reading primary sources, such as the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision and the dissenting opinion by Justice Harlan. Students then analyze the role of various mediums (photographs, speeches, television reports, newspaper articles, etc.) in depicting the Little Rock Nine and write an informational essay. Students end the module by presenting a song choice for a film soundtrack and photographs to lift up as key events in a film based on the memoir.

Materials & Technology: Google Meets Google Chromebooks. Students will need access to the internet for various homework and project assignments. If you need a hotspot, please contact the school for further information.

Be prepared. This includes wardrobe virtually. Please be fully clothed, no bonnets, no durags, and no head scarfs.

Every Davis Dean is expected to participate and act as a contributing member of the class. Cooperation and teamwork is expected from everyone. Please follow the following rules and expectations.
Profanity and offensive language will not be tolerated in my classroom, such as gay, homo, fag, nigga, and nigger. It is offensive to me and to your fellow peers. I understand you may use this in your personal time, but NOT IN MY CLASSROOM.

In case you are absent, you have five days to turn in your late assignment without penalty. This does not include projects. If you are not present for class, you will be marked absent. However, you have until 11:59 pm to turn in assignments to be marked present daily.

All classwork assignments are due by the due date unless specified by Professor Davis. After the due date, two points will be deducted for turned in late. No excuses, just results!

Tests/Projects - 50%
Plagiarism/Cheating is not tolerated. Research should be authentic and properly documented in writing assignments. Students are responsible for completing all assignments individually unless otherwise instructed. Students who copy other students’ work or allowed their work to be copied will share the grade. For example: Student A receives a 100, both students will receive a 50. Essays and projects will result in a zero. Those caught, will sign a plagiarism form and parents will be contacted.
