The BOG is is a state reading assessment for all students in third grade. The goal of this program “is to ensure that every student read at or above grade level by the end of third grade and continue to progress in reading proficiency so that he or she can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex texts needed for secondary education and career success.” The North Carolina BOG3 Reading Test is linked to the Read to Achieve Program. For more information about, please visit the NCDPI Wedsite.
The Read to Achieve Test provides third-grade students an additional opportunity to demonstrate reading proficiency if they did not meet the required score on the end-of-grade (EOG) reading test. This test supports the Read to Achieve legislation, which requires third-grade students to show reading proficiency in order to be promoted, unless exempted for good cause. For more information about the Read to Achieve Program, visit the NCDPI website.
NC Check-Ins
These assessments are part of North Carolina’s Personalized Assessment Tool (NCPAT) and are given throughout the year. Their main goals are to give teachers, students, and families timely, detailed feedback on how students are doing with grade-level standards and to help guide instruction based on each child’s individual needs. They also provide a preview of how students may perform on the end-of-grade (EOG) tests.
End of Grade Test (the EOG)
The North Carolina End-of-Grade (EOG) tests are designed to measure how well students have learned the skills and concepts outlined in the state’s grade-level standards. These tests help show how students are progressing and where they may need additional support. Third grade students complete the ELA and Math EOG.
