To cultivate a positive classroom community we have adopted Responsive Classroom as framework for classroom management. Responsive Classroom builds a social/emotional foundation for students to achieve academic success. Every morning starts with a community building meeting and each day ends with a calm and positive closing circle.
We are no longer using individual rewards such as dojos and prizes. Our students will learn to show respect for themselves, one another, and their things by being motivated intrinsically. We want our Second Graders to make these choices simply because it is the expectation or the right thing to do.
Ultimately the goal is for students to learn from an early age that rewards are not earned for doing what is expected. The motivation must come from within and kids should feel good about themselves because they made the right choice.
