The following websites are programs that may be of interest for your gifted learner. Extracurricular programs offer students enrichment experiences outside of the traditional classroom, help focus students on their individual interests, and can make an impact on their motivation and excitement towards learning. These are also important because they offer the opportunity for your gifted learner to be around others who share similar interests, role models in the field, and other gifted students.
NC School of Science and Mathematics: Offers online summer courses on a variety of topics. They are pricey, but could be an option for anyone interested.
NCDPI Virtual Advanced Learning Resources: NCDPI and Duke TIP collaborated to bring learning lab opportunities to families of advanced learners during remote learning. These new resources are great for helping families support their learners at home and the second link on the website includes extension opportunities and other online resources for families to use.
PHMS Virtual Library: Ms. Ziller has curbside check out for books, book clubs and more! Check it out!
EDX: This online platform allows people to gain access to online courses, many free of charge, though major universities. Check out the various course offerings to see if there is something you are interested in.

The Coder School: Does your student have an interest in coding? The Coder School has classes for all ages and abilities, and they work to meet each student’s individual needs.
Duke TIP Program: Offering a wide variety of enrichment programs, the Duke TIP program is an excellent resource for gifted students. They offer e-studies, scholar weekends, and summer opportunities, as well as opportunities to take the ACT or SAT.
UNCG Enrichment Camp UNCG’s camps for are for students through the age of 15. The variety of classes are sure to catch the attention of your student. This unique opportunity gives students a chance to be on a college campus, which is a great bonus to keep your student focused on the future.
Marbles Teen Play Corp: Encourage your student work on his/her leadership skills while having the opportunity to work alongside museum staff in areas of science, art, and hands on learning. Students apply to be a Teen Play Corp member.
Khan Academy: This free resource is available to anyone who creates an account. Designed to allow users to learn more about various topics, Khan Academy is a fantastic resource for your gifted learner who wants to complete additional studies. It tracks student progress as well!
TedEd: For the gifted learner who loves YouTube, TedEd offers hundreds of videos on a wide variety of topics for students to watch and be engaged with.
Podcasts: The Institute for Educational Advancement website suggests a variety of podcasts targeted toward gifted learners. Podcasts offer a unique and engaging way for students to dig deeper into their interests and learn more.
Outschool: An online program where you can sign students up for classes on a variety of topics. Class registration starts at $5 a class. A wide variety of topics are available with flexible schedule options.
College Preparedness
It may feel like it’s too far away to begin thinking about college, but you’ll want to feel prepared and not get caught by surprise when it comes time for your student to begin the college application process. Use this page from The Davidson Institute to begin the planning process with your student. This second link offers tips from experienced parents and what they wish they had known at the beginning before college snuck up on them. Finally, here’s a third resource for middle school students and parents from Duke TIP’s blog. This resource will continue to be valuable as your student enters high school as it supports students in tips for picking the right college, checklists for grades 8-10, support on how to navigate the application process and more.
While you’re starting the preparation for college, be sure to check out the North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented’s award and scholarship website located here. There are a variety of awards that middle school students are eligible for, and a great way to add to the college savings plan.
