My name is Taryn Higgins and I have been part of the Otter Family (Lake Myra) for 8 years. The first 5 years I taught fourth grade, but the last 3 years I have been part of the Specialist team as the STEAM (Science, Technology, engineering, art, and math) teacher.  I've been teaching for 13 years since graduating from Campbell University, and beginning my 14th year of teaching. I am a lifelong learner, and continued my educational learning by attending Liberty University for my Master's in Education: Learning and Teaching English & a Ed.S in Educational Leadership (so technically I'm Dr. Higgins :) !)  In addition, I am the Head Coach of the Science Olympiad Team for our school. Last year (2022-23), was the first time ever we brought a team to Science Olympiad and we did so well and continue to hope each year it grows larger and stays for as long as Science Olympiad is around.

I have been married to my husband Chris forever!!!  He understands the dedication it takes to educate students because we both taught together in Harnett County the first 2 years after graduating.  However, he (we) decided it was best for him to pursue a different career path that has worked well for our family.

Speaking of family we are proud parents of 2 four legged animals.  Sullivan (or Sully) is our dog and Kit Kitty is our crazy cat. Mr. Higgins and I do not have our own children, but spend plenty of time with my nieces and nephews....We do many activities together! And fishing and being on the boat has been something we do as a couple and a family, as it is a lifelong childhood dream for my husband to be a professional angler. He does partake in a fishing club and does compete during the "fishing" season. Other than that, we enjoy quite nights at home watching things like NC State Football/Basketball, NFL (Go GIANTS!!), and many other shows that are funny, exciting, and peak both our interests.

When it comes to education my number one goal is to support children not only academically, but socially and emotionally.  I believe in building relationships with students and parents, and it is something I have always believed in.  Without relationships there is no learning.  Education is important, it is hard, but it is ALL worth it.  I believe it is my job to help facilitate and inspire students to reach their greatest potential.  I am excited to continue capturing kids imaginations and learning to explore the world around us together.

Love,
