Welcome to 8th Grade Math with Ms. Lyons!

Hello!

I am Ms. Lyons. I am so excited to be your teacher this year! Below, you will find information about this course and helpful information about websites that we will use frequently this year. Don't forget to log into WakeID and check our Google Classroom page for specific assignments, due dates, and upcoming assessments.

About Ms. Lyons

This is my second year at Salem and my seventh year teaching. I am also working on my graduate degree at NC State, pursuing a Master's in Curriculum and Developmental Supervision. Before moving to Wake County, I taught for 4 years in Orange County and 1 year in Maryland, my home state. When I'm not teaching, I love to travel, spend time with friends and family, and generally anything outdoors. I am so excited to have you in my class this year, and I can't wait to get to know all of you too!

This website includes helpful videos, extra practice problems, and other great resources for supporting at-home learning.

Open-Up Resources is the curriculum resource that provides the backbone of this 8th grade math course. On this web page you will find helpful summaries of major topics from each unit in our curriculum. It is important to note that OUR was designed for collaborative in-person learning. Thus, we will supplement with additional learning activities where it is necessary to better suit our online learning environment.

Websites You Should Know

Most Important to Know

From here you can access Powerschool, your student email, Google Classroom, and other learning resources too! This is the one site we will use where you will have to remember a password! As long as you can access WakeID, you can access anything else we will use!

This is your student email that you will use any time you need to contact one of your teachers. If you haven't checked your email lately, you'll want to start doing this frequently.

This is your main learning platform where you will find your assignments, access class information, and receive feedback on your work. You can also use this site to communicate with me or with your classmates!

This is how we will engage in whole-class lessons, as well as office hours and small-group or 1-on-1 live sessions. See the directions above to access our live classroom sessions.

Other Sites We'll Use

Each of the sites below either syncs with Google Classroom, or enables "Log in with Google". This way, students don't have to memorize another password. As long as they are logged into WakeID, they can log into any of the sites below without a password.

Many of our live and independent sessions will involve using Desmos for some fun and collaborate activities. Desmos also works as a calculator, so you'll want to bookmark it so you can find it easily.

Edpuzzle

You probably used Edpuzzle in at least one of your classes last year. If you didn't, you will find it easy to get used to. Using Edpuzzle, you will be assigned videos with check-in questions embedded to assist with independent learning.

Quizizz

Quizizz is a website we will use for the occasional check-in or quiz. Sometimes these will be independent and other times we may play together in a live session.

Chances are that most students have used Khan Academy in some capacity in previous years. We will use Khan Academy primarily as a resource for helpful videos, but Khan Academy can also be an excellent source of practice problems for students who are trying to study

Dreambox provides personalized learning activities for each student intended to reinforce what is learned in class and fill in gaps. Dreambox is found in the WakeID portal.
